REALTOR® Code of Ethics

REALTORS® must adhere to a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice that is put forth by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and enforced by the GKAR Professional Standards Committee. It contains duties above and in addition to those imposed by law or regulation which apply only to real estate professionals who choose to become REALTORS®.

Step-by-Step Training Guide for REALTORS®

Step 1  Check Your Code of Ethics Completion Status
You can log into your NAR Account to check your Code of Ethics training status. From your profile, select "Manage Account". Your Code of Ethics completion status will populate on the right-side of the Dashboard under “My Education”. 

If you are not complete, proceed to Step 2.
  - Failure to complete by December 13th, 2024, will result in suspension of all Membership services.

If you are complete, proceed to Step 3.

Step 2  Complete the Code of Ethics Training
REALTOR® and Appraiser Members have three options to satisfy the NAR-required Code of Ethics training:

Option A
Complete Your Ethics Training Online at NAR.REALTOR
Once you have completed this online course, please email Support@GKAR.com indicating you have completed the Code of Ethics requirement through NAR and the date you completed the training. Staff will update our records for the current cycle.

Option B
Find Training Online
GKAR has partnered with The CE Shop to provide self-directed Continuing Education courses. Some of these Con Ed courses may also meet the NAR Code of Ethics requirements. View the available training and locate a course with the NAR ETHICS flag. Please contact GKAR before purchasing a course to confirm it will meet the necessary requirements.

Option C
NAR’s C2EX Endorsement Qualifies for Ethics Training
Commitment to Excellence (C2EX) from NAR empowers REALTORS® to evaluate, enhance, and showcase their highest levels of professionalism. It’s not a course, class, or designation—it’s an Endorsement that you can promote when serving clients and other REALTORS®.

As an added bonus, once you earn your C2EX Endorsement, you may use it to qualify as your Code of Ethics Training requirement for that current cycle. C2EX is always updating, so anyone with the Endorsement will receive notification when new content is available. If there is new content during a new Ethics Cycle and you complete it to maintain your C2EX Endorsement, that would again qualify for Code of Ethics Training. So essentially, keeping your C2EX Endorsement current could meet your Code of Ethics Training requirement over and over again.

What is Code of Ethics training?

As a REALTOR® Member, you are required by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) to complete one Code of Ethics Training during each three-year cycle. REALTORS®, including Appraiser Members, are required to complete ethics training of not less than 2.5 hours of instructional time. The training must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by NAR. The current Ethics Cycle 7 will end December 13th, 2024.

Why does NAR require Code of Ethics training?

One of the defining differences between you, a REALTOR®, and other real estate professionals, is your adherence to the NAR Code of Ethics. As a REALTOR®, you conduct your business duties above and in addition to those imposed by law or regulation. 

Mandatory ethics training for REALTOR® Members was first established by the NAR Board of Directors at the 1999 Annual Convention. The Code of Ethics training encourages REALTORS® to view their Code of Ethics as a living, viable guide in their daily dealings with clients, customers, and the public, heightens awareness of the key tenets of the Code of Ethics, appreciation for the role the Code can and should play in professional lives, and enhances professionalism and competency. 

Failure to complete training, during the three-year cycle, will lead to suspension of Membership immediately following the cycle deadline (December 13th, 2024), with termination of Membership starting March 1st after the cycle deadline.

To whom does this apply?

All active REALTOR® and Appraiser Members. Members who have earned the NAR REALTOR® Emeritus status are exempt from the NAR Code of Ethics requirements.

How can a Broker check if their Agents have completed the required training?

Brokers can click the link below to see the most recent report of Agents who have not completed their NAR Code of Ethics Training Requirement. Staff will update this link again on or before April 30th, 2024.

Where do I take Code of Ethics training?

Training may be completed through NAR’s online courses or through another method, such as online or classroom courses taken at your local or state association.

When registering for NAR’s Code of Ethics online training, you will need to provide your first and last name or your Member ID number. If you do not know your Member ID number, you can find it:

  • On your NAR Membership Card. It is the 8 or 9-digit number.
  • On your REALTOR® Magazine label. It is the 8 or 9-digit number between the slashes, above your name.
  • Use the NAR “Find your Member ID” form

When does the current training cycle end?

The current cycle, Cycle 7, began January 1st, 2022, and will end December 13th, 2024. The future cycle, Cycle 8, will begin January 1st, 2025.
